Join the Winthrop P. Rockefeller team and help us fight the battle against cancer.

The UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences is seeking an exceptional and innovative candidate for a tenure-track Epidemiology junior or mid-career faculty position in the following disease site areas: breast, colorectal, lung, gynecological and prostate cancers. The faculty member will join a team of cancer-focused researchers examining the important cancer issues specific for Arkansas, which include the epidemiologic factors that affect the incidence and type of cancer in persistent poverty counties and rural populations.

Applicants must hold a doctorate in Epidemiology from an accredited program and be highly competent in epidemiologic research methods. Priority will be given to investigators with active extramural funding. Applicants should have a strong record of sustained productivity as a faculty member with high impact publications and extramural funding. The position will have access to substantial resources, including a multiple year robust transdisciplinary research package focused on the unique cancer burdens of Arkansas and potential for an endowed chair and/or leadership position in the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute.

This recruiting effort is made possible through significant institutional support and an annual commitment from the state of Arkansas to support the Cancer Institute’s efforts to attain NCI Designation. The Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute is the only cancer center in the state of Arkansas with a robust cancer research portfolio and a mission to improve cancer outcomes for all Arkansans. The Cancer Institute treats over 2,500 new cancer patients annually and has an extensive effort focused on delivering cancer care and conducting research in underserved populations. Its 170+ members conduct outstanding cancer research in multiple scientific programs. Cancer Institute members receive approximately $20 million in extramural cancer research funds annually, including multiple “team science” grants. The Cancer Institute has six institutional shared resource facilities, including the IDeA National Resource for Quantitative Proteomics which provides protein identification, mapping of post-translational modifications, global proteomics, and quantitative comparison of proteins in biological samples, and has recently hired 21 laboratory-based cancer researchers. A robust clinical trials infrastructure currently supports nearly 270 cancer clinical trials. UAMS is one of 57 institutions with an NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award, which supports translational research and creates a supportive environment that synergizes with the Cancer Institute to promote transdisciplinary research. UAMS researchers also lead five NIH-funded Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE’s), with three having ongoing cancer focused research activities. UAMS faculty work in collaboration with Arkansas Children’s Hospital and its Research Institute, including a USDA-funded nutrition center, to address pediatric cancer-related clinical care and research.

Applicants should send a 3-page research statement, their Curriculum Vitae, and 3 professional references directly to Recruitment Administrator, Jennifer Moulton, at [email protected]. Applications will be reviewed now through June 1, 2023. Most of the work within Population Science uses the Cancer Prevention Studies (CPS), a series of large-scale prospective cohort studies built and maintained by the American Cancer Society since the 1950s. The CPS cohorts include extensive survey-based data and other data sources such as accelerometry, blood, stool, saliva, and tumor tissue. The American Cancer Society has recently approved the launch of a new cohort to better characterize cancer risk and drivers of disparate cancer outcomes in Black women. We seek a doctorally-trained scientist in epidemiology to help facilitate the development of this new cohort.

– Collaborate with study management and intramural research scientists to develop protocols, consent procedures, and data use agreements.
– Engage with the American Cancer Society’s marketing and community outreach teams to build and implement recruitment strategies.
– Collaborate with study management and intramural research scientists to identify and develop data collection procedures, including questionnaire development and logistical protocols for biological and physical assessments.
– Provide programming support of external linkages (e.g., medical records, census data, cancer registries, and connection to personal devices)
– Interface with Study Management to (1) assist with participant consent process; (2) monitor data collection efforts; (3) receive and manage data deliveries; (4) oversee the manipulation, organization, and cleaning of data; and (5) track participants, as necessary.
– Facilitate regular project updates to study team and leadership.
– Assist in the documentation and reporting of scientific activities to American Cancer Society staff and stakeholders, the scientific community, and general public.
