ASPO’s 50th Anniversary
Advancing Cancer Prevention. Empowering Researchers. Improving Lives.
For the last five decades, the American Society of Preventive Oncology (ASPO) has brought together researchers, clinicians, public health officials, advocates, and trainees dedicated to one shared mission: reducing the burden of cancer through prevention, early detection, and control.
Since 1976, ASPO has served as a home of collaboration, innovation, mentorship, and scientific discovery. Together, our members have transformed how we understand cancer and have helped transform shaped policies and practices that save lives.
As we celebrate the last 50 years, we reflect on a legacy of scientific excellence, groundbreaking discoveries, and enduring collaboration. We honor the visionaries who built this community, celebrate the members whose work has transformed the field of cancer prevention, and look ahead with excitement to the innovations and breakthroughs still to come.

Honoring Our Presidents
Each president has brought unique perspectives and expertise, guiding the Society through periods of growth, scientific advancement, and evolving opportunities in cancer prevention. Their leadership has strengthened our commitment to collaboration, mentorship, and innovation while advancing ASPO’s mission to reduce the burden of cancer through prevention, early detection, and control.
As we reflect on ASPO’s rich history, we celebrate the leaders whose guidance and dedication have helped define our past, strengthen our present, and inspire our future. We invite you to join us in honoring the remarkable contributions of ASPO’s past presidents and the enduring legacy of leadership they have created over the last 50 years.

Reflecting on the 2025 ASPO Annual Meeting
This year, as part of our 50th celebration, ASPO’s Annual Meeting engaged in thought-provoking scientific sessions, keynote presentations, workshops, and discussions focused on the future of our Society and cancer prevention. The program highlighted emerging research, innovative approaches to reducing the burden of cancer, and the importance of multidisciplinary collaboration in addressing one of the most pressing public health challenges.
Our Keynote speaker, Anna Guiliano, PhD (Moffitt Cancer Center), delivered an inspiring session on “The Past 50 years from Cervical Cancer Prevention to Elimination of Cervical Cancer and other HPV-driven Cancers”. Dr. Guiliano explored the remarkable progress made over the last five decades in understanding and preventing HPV-related cancers. From the discovery of HPV’s role in cervical cancer to the development of highly effective vaccines and advances in screening and early detection, the session highlighted major milestones that have transformed cancer prevention worldwide. Attendees also gained insight into ongoing research and global efforts still needed to eliminate cervical cancer and other HPV-driven cancers.
The Annual Meeting also provided an opportunity to celebrate those who make ASPO a vibrant and impactful community. Through our breakfast and poster sessions, first-time attendee gathering, community & science roundtables, and 50th anniversary celebration, attendees had the chance to connect with other like-minded members.
50th Anniversary Fundraising Campaign
As part of ASPO’s 50th Anniversary Celebration, we are raising money to provide travel scholarships for trainees presenting their research at our future ASPO annual meetings. You can make an impact with a $50 gift or donation for 50 years of ASPO, or make a splash this summer by donating $250 or more to receive a complimentary ASPO 50th Anniversary water bottle (while supplies last)!
With the support of ASPO members, we were proud to present the Golden Anniversary Travel Award to two trainees, covering their Annual Meeting registration and travel expenses so they could attend the meeting. By removing financial barriers, this award made it possible for these emerging professionals to take part in the meeting and engage with the broader cancer prevention research community. By investing in trainees today, ASPO is helping strengthen the future of cancer prevention research and ensuring promising scientists have the opportunity to grow, collaborate, and contribute to the field.
