Huntsman Cancer Institute (HCI) at the University of Utah seeks a skilled and dynamic leader to serve as Senior Director of Population Sciences. Applications from established scientists or physician-scientists engaged in research in cancer epidemiology, particularly genetic and molecular epidemiology, cancer risk assessment, cancer prevention and control, behavior and communication, survivorship, health outcomes, and/or cancer health disparities and interventions (particularly related to rural/frontier populations) are encouraged to apply. Additionally, the ideal candidate would possess strong emotional intelligence, a service-style leadership approach, drive, appreciation for team science, and a willingness to engage in continuous learning and coaching. The HCI Senior Director of Population Science will report directly to the Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center at HCI, and will have a key role in strategic development of the Cancer Center. The successful candidate will be appointed to an endowed professorship and will have the opportunity to lead during a period of extensive strategic expansion of HCI’s cancer population science efforts. The Senior Director of Population Sciences will lead the recruitment of new faculty with innovative and high impact cancer research programs.
This position requires exceptional leadership skills, the ability to attract national cancer research grants, demonstrated experience in development of multidisciplinary teams and successful mentoring of junior faculty. The HCI Senior Director of Population Sciences will also receive a faculty appointment in an appropriate Department within the University of Utah, such as the Department of Population Health Sciences or the Department of Human Genetics, in alignment with expertise of the candidate.

The Utah Cancer Registry, a founding member of the NCI SEER program, provides a powerful resource to support cancer research studies. Via an affiliation with Intermountain Healthcare in which clinical records for 85% of the cancer patients in Utah are linked to genealogical, cancer registry, and demographic records, HCI investigators have unprecedented opportunities to advance knowledge in cancer genetics, risk assessment, early detection/prevention, and health outcomes. Tremendous institutional shared resources support research across the University of Utah Health Sciences, including an NIH-supported Clinical and Translational Science Center (hsc.unm.edu/research/ctsc) which provides specialized support for clinical/translational/community research and faculty development. In addition to world-class research infrastructure, HCI has a strong clinical program with a 100-bed cancer specialty hospital, extensively characterized high risk populations, and actively engaged patients.
Minimum Qualifications: 1) PhD, DrPH, or MD, with appropriate post-doctoral training in an area of Cancer Population Sciences. MD candidates who wish to actively practice must be board-certified and eligible to practice in Utah. 2) Must have an established track record of scientific accomplishments with extramural peer-reviewed funding or senior experience in governmental or other agency focused on cancer population sciences. 3) Must have demonstrated administrative and leadership experience. 4) Must be eligible to work in US.
