Wayne State University and McLaren Health Care announce an exceptional opportunity for a nationally recognized physician-scientist to serve as President and Chief Executive Officer for Karmanos Cancer Institute (KCI). The President/CEO will set the strategic vision for KCI, while guiding and inspiring its transformation to the next level of growth and development. The President and CEO of KCI is responsible for strategic planning and evaluation, scientific direction, community outreach and engagement, coordinated delivery of multidisciplinary clinical cancer care, advancement and development activities (through the Karmanos Cancer Foundation) and organizational administration. The President/CEO shall be the lead community ambassador for the KCI. Overall success will entail working productively and seamlessly between multiple organizations that contribute to the mission of understanding, treating and conquering cancer.
The Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute is the only National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer center in metro Detroit and one of just 53 centers of its kind in the United States. KCI is the largest provider of cancer care and research in Michigan and provides cancer patients with increased access to advanced cancer care in communities throughout Michigan and northern Ohio.
Caring for approximately 12,000 new patients annually and conducting more than 800 cancer-specific scientific investigation programs and clinical trials, KCI is among the nation’s top cancer centers. KCI offers one of the largest clinical trials programs in the nation, giving patients access to more than 250 promising new treatments often not found at other hospitals or health organizations.
Through the commitment of 1,000 staff, including nearly 300 faculty members, and supported by thousands of volunteer and financial donors, KCI strives to lead in transformative cancer care, research and education through courage, commitment and compassion. KCI’s long-term partnership with the Wayne State University School of Medicine enhances the collaboration of critical research and academics related to cancer care.
The President/CEO is responsible for the efficient function and coordination of all activities of KCI (Karmanos Cancer Hospital and Karmanos Cancer Network), interpreting and administering policies of the Corporation and Board of Trustees, and ensuring that academic/research programs and patient care services provided represent the highest standards of achievement for Comprehensive Cancer Centers. The President/CEO is also responsible for the effective management of KCI including: physical plant and personnel for academic/research programs; operating within the approved budget on a sound financial basis; community promotion of KCI programs and services; policies to be considered by the Corporate President/CEO and Board; and market share growth.
The President/CEO will also chair the Department of Oncology for the Wayne State University School of Medicine. In this capacity he/she will report to the Dean of the medical school and work in collaboration with Wayne State’s Office of Research and chairs/faculty in the relevant schools and colleges, while providing the strategic vision, leadership and planning to ensure the department’s growing excellence in cancer research and clinical care.
The President and CEO serves as leader in three interconnected positions: President and Chief Executive Officer of the KCI; Chair of the Department of Oncology for the Wayne State University School of Medicine; and Cancer Center Director and Principal Investigator of the Cancer Center Support Grant (CCSG). The President/CEO is appointed by the McLaren Health Care President/CEO, and the President of Wayne State University (with concurrence from the KCI governing body), with direct reporting on the conduct of the affairs and operations of the respective entities. The President/CEO also is an ex officio member of the Board of Trustees of KCI.
