Posting Date: 02/12/2020

Job Information/Description:

Postdoctoral Position at the NIH/NIEHS

Environmental Risk Factors, Epigenetics and Breast Cancer

We are seeking talented and motivated postdoctoral fellows with training and experience in epidemiology, biostatistics, environmental health sciences, or the equivalent to join the Epidemiology Branch at the NIH National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (www.niehs.nih.gov/epi). Positions are available in the Environment and Cancer Epidemiology Group headed by Alexandra J. White. Successful candidates will have a strong background in epidemiology and statistical methods, with interest in environmental exposures, epigenetics, and cancer.  Experience in exposure measurement, mixtures methods, biomarker studies, geographic information systems, genomics and/or gene/environment interactions is beneficial but not required.

Environmental risk factors for cancer are important but understudied. Few studies have considered simultaneous exposure to environmental mixtures in relation to cancer risk or evaluated how these exposures may be associated with markers of risk such as DNA methylation patterns. Postdoctoral fellow will be able to take advantage of data from large prospective studies, including the Sister Study (https://sisterstudy.niehs.nih.gov/). The Sister Study includes over 50,000 women across the United States with extensive questionnaire data and biologic specimens. Study participants are followed for numerous health outcomes including breast and other cancers.

The fellow’s time will be devoted to data analysis, manuscript preparation, and career development. The fellow will have the opportunity to propose related research that can be internally funded. Postdoctoral fellows at NIEHS are eligible and encouraged to apply for K99/R00 and non-NIH research grants. While NIEHS fellows have no teaching responsibilities, interaction with faculty and students at local universities (University of North Carolina, North Carolina State University, and Duke University) can be facilitated and is encouraged. Opportunities for mentoring undergraduate and graduate students are also available.

Salary and benefits are highly competitive. Initial appointment will be two years at NIEHS in Durham, North Carolina, with additional time (up to 5 years) depending on productivity. For more information on these positions, please contact [email protected].
