Research Training Program

 

Full-time mentored research training postdoctoral fellowships supported by the  Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (ARHQ) through T32 Institutional National Research Service Awards (NRSA)

This is a mentored research training program in health services, outcomes, and effectiveness research (Kenneth Saag, MD, MSc, PD/PI; Mike Mugavero, MD, MHSc, Co-Director). The final deadline for postdoctoral applications is Friday, March 15, 2019 at 5:00 PM CST. Notification of selection will be in early April 2019. The postdoctoral fellowship will begin July 1, 2019.

Program content areas include but may not be limited to:

  • Healthcare efficiency & disparities
  • Healthcare quality measurement & improvement
  • Patient-centered outcomes research
  • Comparative effectiveness research
  • Pharmacoepidemiology & patient safety
  • Translating research evidence into practice & policy
  • Economic evaluation & decision analytic modeling
  • Health informatics

The training program prepares independent investigators to pursue careers in health services and outcomes research focused on translating research evidence into practice. Scholars are also trained in comparative effectiveness research methods for evaluating the benefits and harms of different treatment strategies and interventions on patient outcomes in real world settings. Skills development will include exposure to relevant epidemiological, statistical, experimental, and quasi- experimental methodologies, analysis of large data sets, health outcomes assessment, and economic evaluation, all with an emphasis on the practical application of outcomes research methodology.

Our research and training base includes a partnership of UAB interdisciplinary research centers and programs and

is primarily drawn from across 7 UAB Schools (Medicine, Public Health, Health Professions, Nursing, Dentistry, Business, and College of Arts and Science), offering a pool of over 30 experienced HSR/CER Mentors. The fellowship offers:

Annual NRSA Stipend for Full-Time Multidisciplinary Mentored Research Training

Short-Term Practicum Experiences – Portfolio of innovative rotations with internal and off-site experts and organizations

Tuition Support for Didactic Training – Degree and non-degree track training for HSR/CER through relevant MSPH, DrPH and PhD programs (equal to 60% of the level requested by the applicant institution, up to $4,500 per year for non-degree seeking, and up to $12,500 per year for degree seeking)

Training Related Expenses – Health insurance, travel stipend, etc. (up to an additional $8,850 annually)

Opportunities to Interact with an Interdisciplinary Group of peers, mentors, and invited experts during weekly seminars

ELIGIBILITY: Candidates must be U.S. citizens, non-citizen nationals, or have permanent residency status. Eligible applicants will have earned a clinical or research doctorate, including PhD, ScD, DrPH, MD, DO, DC, ND, DDS, DMD, DNS, or equivalent doctoral degree. Candidates must be able to demonstrate a commitment to full-time research training. For clinicians, the program may be coordinated with a current residency program or clinical fellowship and will allow for some minimum time allocated to clinical activities that are conducted outside the 40 hours per week required for full-time research training.
