GOVERNOR SIDNEY S. McMATH ENDOWED CHAIR IN OBESITY PREVENTION AND DIRECTOR OF THE CENTER FOR THE STUDY OF OBESITY

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences’ Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health invites highly qualified candidates to apply for the Governor Sidney S. McMath Endowed Chair in Nutrition and Obesity Prevention and Director of the Center for the Study of Obesity.

Candidates for the endowed chair must possess a doctoral degree in public health or a related field.  Candidates will have a strong research record related to nutrition and obesity and be capable of leading the development of an interdisciplinary Center for the Study of Obesity in the College.  Preferably, the successful candidate’s research area will be related to the nutrition/obesity/cancer nexus, although other areas will be seriously considered.  Candidates must be qualified for primary appointment as Professor with Tenure in one of the College of Public Health’s five core disciplines.

The successful candidate will be expected to create and foster collaborative relationships with faculty and scientists across the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) campuses.  Opportunities for collaboration exist with U.A.M.S.’ centers of excellence:  the Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, the Donald W. Reynolds Institute on Aging, the Stephens Spine Institute, the Psychiatric Research Institute, the Myeloma Institute, the Translational Research Institute, and the Arkansas Children’s Nutrition Center.  It is anticipated that the Center for the Study of Obesity will develop not only active research programs related to obesity prevention, but will also contribute to the College’s diverse educational and training programs.

The Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health (https://publichealth.uams.edu) was created in 2001 with support from the Arkansas tobacco settlement funds.  The College is accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health.  As part of the state’s only academic health sciences center, the College enjoys close relationships with the Colleges of Medicine, Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Professions and the Graduate School.  The College has very close relationships with the Arkansas Department of Health and the Arkansas Department of Human Services.

UAMS is located in Little Rock, the capital of Arkansas.  Little Rock is centrally located in the state on the Arkansas River (http://www.littlerock.com/).  The city is a growing and thriving metropolitan area and a hub for business, arts, government, and healthcare.  Little Rock boasts thriving restaurant, entertainment, and art scenes.  The city is extremely affordable, with the cost of living being low compared to other parts of the country.  There are over 50 miles of biking/walking trails in the city along the Arkansas River.  Little Rock was honored in 2013 as the number one small to mid-sized city by Kiplinger’s 10 Great Places to Live.  In May 2016 the city was ranked by U.S. News and World Report as the fourth most affordable city to live in the U.S. (http://realestate.usnews.com/real-estate/slideshows/the-20-best-affordable-places-to-live-in-the-us/.  The city was also ranked by Forbes as one of the 15 Best Cities for Young Adults and one of five Secret Foodie Cities.
