The Mel & Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health is currently the only nationally accredited college of public health in the state of Arizona. The College has numerous innovative teaching, research, and service programs and is a valued partner in community-based research projects addressing health issues relevant to border communities and indigenous populations.

Duties and responsibilities:
• Provide strategic vision and leadership for developing, implementing, and evaluating
education and research programs in accordance with the Department, College, Health
Sciences, and University strategic plans
• Provide vision and leadership to encourage faculty development and enhance the
research, teaching, and service missions of the Department
• Oversee the finance, operation, and personnel in the department
• Represent the Department on the Dean’s Council
• Participate in teaching responsibilities of the department that may include graduate and
undergraduate level courses and mentoring Masters and Doctoral students
• Sustain an independent research program with external peer-reviewed funding
• Lead or participate in intramural, extramural and outreach service
• Foster collaborative relationships within MEZCOPH, the UArizona Health
Sciences, UArizona and external groups to strengthen interdisciplinary and
industry ties, community organizations, public agencies, discipline societies and
other related organizations
• Promote sense of belonging by creating a positive and productive climate for
departmental faculty, staff, and students
Minimum qualifications:
• PhD or equivalent terminal degree in Biostatistics, Epidemiology, or closely related field
• Documented sustained scholarly accomplishments with high quality publications and
research funding support
• Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion
• Previous leadership experience in developing and managing innovative education
programs
• A strong track record of teaching and mentoring junior faculty, graduate and
undergraduate students

Preferred qualifications:
• Full Professor at the current institution
• A known international leader in Epidemiology or Biostatistics with evidence of national
distinction in service and evidence of high impact scientific research
• Demonstrated outstanding leadership in an academic department of Biostatistics or
Epidemiology
• Experience in the development and successful implementation of new academic
programs and services
• Demonstrated experience in developing strong partnerships for education, research, and
service

Position summary:
The Chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Mel and Enid Zuckerman
College of Public Health (MEZCOPH) will provide leadership to the teaching, research, and
service missions of the Department. This position reports to the Dean of the College of Public
Health.

Purpose of the position
The Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health (MEZCOPH) at the University of
Arizona (UArizona) invites applicants for the Chair of the Department of Epidemiology and
Biostatistics. We seek a strategic leader and distinguished scholar who has established expertise
and leadership in Epidemiology or Biostatistics. The ideal candidate has demonstrated the ability to lead and contribute to interdisciplinary research, teaching, and/or service teams. At the
UArizona, we value our inclusive climate, and we seek individuals who have experience working
with diverse students, colleagues, and communities.

We are seeking a dynamic epidemiologist or biostatistician to provide leadership and vision for
the Department; to build on the strong foundation of research, teaching, and service of our faculty and students; and to foster an intellectual environment that supports diverse perspectives and excellence. We seek to strengthen innovation in instruction and research, to stimulate transdisciplinary research, to increase experiential learning for both undergraduate and graduate students, and to expand community engagement to align with the goals of MEZCOPH and the UArizona. The Chair is expected to collaborate with other researchers at UArizona as well as with public health partners and collaborators throughout the state of Arizona and globally.

The Department leads the Epidemiology and Biostatistics MPH, MS, and PhD degree programs, a
Population Health Data Science minor, and a Quantitative Track in the College’s Public Health
Undergraduate Program. Faculty in the Department also contribute to other degree programs,
including the College-wide One Health MPH degree, the Statistics Graduate Interdisciplinary
Program (MS and PhD), and certificate programs within the UArizona.

The UArizona is a land grant university and Hispanic-serving institution situated in the desert
Southwest along the US-Mexico Border. The university serves high percentages of Hispanic and
Native American students compared with other universities in the US. The environment and
diverse populations present many unique health research questions. There are exciting
opportunities to collaborate with departments and centers across campus including those focused on basic and applied research in cancer, toxicology, engineering, environmental science, ethnic studies, and life sciences.
