The Department of Family Medicine (FM) in the UVA School of Medicine and University of Virginia Comprehensive Cancer Center (UVACCC) are jointly seeking applicants for a tenured or tenure-eligible faculty position at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor. The successful faculty candidate will be appointed within FM to conduct scientific research and collaborate with other investigators on topics related to disease prevention and health promotion. This individual will have to opportunity to play an important role in the Department’s vision to expand its research capacity and be a leader in primary care and population health research. Candidates must have a proven track record of successful federally funded research in the field of disease prevention and health promotion and a scholarly record of collaboration in multidisciplinary investigator teams informed by community outreach and engagement principles and practice. We are seeking an investigator with a collaborative style that fosters and supports teamwork, change and innovation. Applicants can hold an MD, MD/PhD or PhD. MD candidates will have 75% allocated for research and 25% for clinical care. Clinical Track and Tenure status is dependent upon qualifications. MD candidates must be Board certified in Family Medicine.
The Department of Family Medicine includes a cohesive dedicated group of 28 faculty, 1-2 family medicine fellows per year, 24 resident physicians, and 4 family nurse practitioners. The department currently operates five practices that provide a strong base for clinical education. The Family Medicine Primary Care Center (FMPCC), located adjacent to the University Hospital, serves a culturally and economically diverse patient population. The Stoney Creek Family Practice Center is located in rural Nelson County, Crossroads Family Medicine is located in southern Albemarle County and serves a rural population that includes a growing number of migrant workers, and Western Albemarle Family Practice Center, located west of Charlottesville, serves a rapidly growing area with young families. The newest practice, Pantops Integrative Medicine, provides primary care with a holistic, integrative approach including massage therapy and yoga as well as a cancer survivorship program. All practice sites are certified as NCQA-Patient Centered Medical Homes.
The Department’s research endeavors have focused on four areas: health disparities, prevention, population health, and quality of care. The Department is known internationally for work in evidence-based medicine, sudden infant death syndrome and other sudden unexpected infant death, cancer prevention and disparities, and the molecular and genetic epidemiology of colon cancer. It is an institutional leader in the areas of diversity, refugee healthcare with creation of the International Family Medicine Clinic in 2002, and in transgender healthcare with the creation of the UVA Adult Transgender Clinic in 2018. The Department is currently ranked 24th for NIH funding among all Departments of Family Medicine nation-wide. Research infrastructure support includes statistical and quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods expertise.
The UVACCC is based in Charlottesville Virginia, and serves a large racially and ethnically diverse catchment area ranging from northern VA to Southern and Southwest VA, and includes areas in West Virginia. Throughout its 30-plus years of existence, the UVA Cancer Center has continued to grow in excellence. High priority scientific research areas within the UVA Cancer Center include: socio-demographic cancer disparities, access to cancer screening and follow-up care, prevention and control of tobacco and obesity, cancer epidemiology and risk assessment, and the care of cancer survivors in diverse settings. We are the only cancer center in Virginia listed in Becker’s 100 hospitals and health systems with great oncology programs. These accolades are based primarily on our expertise which is provided through state-of-the-art multidisciplinary clinical teams in all major cancers. We attract patients from around Virginia, the U.S., and the world. The depth and breadth of the UVA Cancer’s research and service was recently recognized by the NCI with the award of comprehensive status (effective February 1, 2022).
Qualified candidates must have MD, DO, MD/PhD or PhD and be board certified in Family Medicine if practicing clinically.
