Powell bouwde al tijdens zijn tijd aan de hts zijn eerste skateboards. Toen zijn zoon jaren later vroeg naar een skateboard en niet helemaal tevreden was met het rijgedrag van de constructies van George Powell, ontstond de ambitie van zijn vader. Hij verbeterde zijn constructies, gebruikte glasvezel en aluminium voor zijn boards en maakte de eerste
