The road is 717 miles long and sweeps back and forth through mountain country. The section between Burma and Kunming were built during the Second Sino Japanese War in 1937 by Chinese laborers. The road had a role in World War II, as the British used the road to transport military materials to China (Burma was under British rule at the time).
