A native of Salem, Massachusetts, Frank W. Benson studied art at Boston's Museum School, where he served as editor for the school's publication. In 1883, Benson studied at the Academie Julian in Paris. Upon, his return to the states, Benson opened his own art studio on Chestnut Street in Salem, where he began painting portraits of friends and
