1893 Print Chicago World's Fair Cupid Sculpture Sphinx ORIGINAL HISTORIC FAR1 XAD7 " "The Gates of Yesterday"An American Myth. This is an original 1894 halftone print showing an outdoor sculpture of a Sphinx. This unfinished work was in the Exposition grounds, east of the Art Palace. The sculptor is Theodore Baur of New York. He titled this piece "The Secret," which can be justified by the little Cupid whispering into the Sphinx's ear. The Sphinx has been used throughout history as an icon and also a myth with a body of a lioness and the head of a women.
