ASPO is now welcoming nominations for the Joseph W. Cullen Memorial Award and the Joseph F. Fraumeni, Jr. Distinguished Achievement Award! We encourage you to recognize individuals whose work in tobacco control and preventive oncology has made an impact on public health. Nominate those who exemplify the spirit of collaboration and innovation in their fields.

The Joseph W. Cullen Memorial Award was created in honor of Dr. Cullen’s unparalleled contributions to tobacco control. As Program Coordinator for the National Cancer Institute’s Smoking Tobacco and Cancer Program from 1982 to 1989, Dr. Cullen was the architect of the largest tobacco intervention and control program anywhere in the world. Awardees demonstrate distinguished achievement in tobacco control efforts through research, the development of prevention and cessation programs with wide-reaching public health impact, or through public policy and advocacy initiatives. Furthermore the Cullen Award honors individuals whose leadership, like Dr. Cullen’s, exemplifies a commitment to fostering collaboration among the wide network of scientists, health care professionals, and public health advocates involved in the fight against tobacco and tobacco-related disease. The awardee is invited to present at ASPO’s 2025 Annual Meeting.

The Joseph F. Fraumeni, Jr. Distinguished Achievement Award is given annually to an outstanding scientist in the area of preventive oncology, cancer control and/or cancer prevention. This Awardee has made substantial research contributions of depth and breadth. In the evaluation process, consideration also is given to contributions by the Awardee to ASPO.  The award was renamed for Dr. Fraumeni in 2016.

Nominations are accepted through October 18. Selected recipients are required to be present at the 2025 Annual Meeting to receive the awards.
